[2] QuickTime 3.0 Developer Preview Release Posted

Apple has posted the QuickTime 3.0 Developer Preview Release to its web site so that you can immediately begin incorporating its advanced features into your digital media products. [3] WebObjects 3.5 Offers Improved Java Support

WebObjects 3.5, the latest enhancement to Apple's web application development platform, is now available through Apple. This new version, with its Direct-to-Web technology and improved Java support, is dramatically easier to use. Improvements in version 3.5 include the following:

[4] G3 Upgrade Information

G3 is Apple's name for the latest PowerPC processor from the Apple/IBM/Motorola alliance. (At MACWORLD Expo/Boston, the chip was referred to as the PowerPC 750, but Apple's official name is PowerPC G3.) The G3 processor is the first microprocessor in the industry to be optimized for an operating system, Mac OS, rather than the other way around. Included among its many new features is a "backside" cache--very fast memory that has its own high-speed connection to the PowerPC G3 processor. This cache can be accessed by the processor three to four times faster than that of previous cache designs. Real-world tests are showing a 200 percent speed improvement over the 200 MHz PowerPC 604e. This database is accessed by thousands of Mac OS users a day, and recent enhancements have increased its usefulness and popularity. [6] European Developer Forum Attendance Increases 30 Percent

Apple Computer Europe confirmed that attendance to its European Developer Forum (EDF97), which took place in Brussels in November, increased by more than 30 percent over last year. The increased numbers confirm a renewed and growing commitment to the Mac OS platform by European developers. Developer program membership has increased across Europe, with some countries showing significant growth, including 11 percent in the United Kingdom and 23 percent in the Sweden/Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) region.

[7] Changes in Apple Developer Relations

David Krathwohl is resigning his position as vice president of Apple's Worldwide Developer Relations organization. He will be replaced at the beginning of 1998 by Clent Richardson, a former evangelism manager at Apple. Clent returns to Apple from Design Intelligence of Seattle WA, where he is vice president of sales and acting vice president of marketing. Design Intelligence is an Apple developer and an early adoptor of Apple's Rhapsody operating system.

[8] Apple's Mac OS 8 Charity Contribution Program

Apple announced that it will donate US$ 10 for every consumer purchase of Mac OS 8 software before January 15, 1998, to one of the following charities: The Humane Society of the United States, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

[9] WebObjects Programming Courses, Northern Virginia

Apple and BLaCKSMITH, an object-oriented software development and services company, have joined to deliver training programs on Apple's web development platform, WebObjects. Geared for corporate programmers and analysts, these courses are designed to make it easier for attendees to create dynamic web applications. The first five-day session is scheduled for January 26-30 at BLaCKSMITH's training facilities in McLean, Virginia. The cost for the five-day session is US$ 1,875.

The Center for Software Development is a nonprofit organization providing key resources that software developers need for successfully starting and expanding the next generation of technology businesses. (Apple is a "pillar partner" of this organization.) CSD offers self-service, multivendor test labs as well as business and technical seminars. Fees for CSD's facilities and events are waived or reduced for Mac OS developers.

[13] User Group Academy Awards Entries Due December 12

In mid-December, the User Group Academy will meet in Washington, D.C., to select the best user group newsletters, web sites, and heroes. According to the event's organizers, awards will be presented at an event held at the User Group Academy Awards, January 7, at MACWORLD Expo/San Francisco. The deadline for submissions has been extended to December 12 (contrary to what's posted on the awards web page as of Dec. 4).
